K20 Energy Scholarship

The Award

The K20 Energy Scholarship is created for 2008 high school graduates from Oklahoma school districts that have programs supported by OU’s K20 Center.  The K20 Energy Scholarships are designed for entering OU freshmen with an interest in pursuing energy-related degrees.  Each scholarship award offers $1,000 per academic year (for a total of four years), and a one-time award of $1,500  to be used for a laptop computer and peripherals, as well as $1,250 to design, implement and assess a service learning project in the student’s local community.

Eligibility

To be considered for the K20 Energy Scholarship, the candidate must:

  • Be an Oklahoma resident graduating from one of the K20 Center’s partner high schools or districts that have received a K20 Center’s science or technology grant.
  • Be admitted to the University of Oklahoma for the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • Maintain superior academic progress (at least a 3.0 overall yearly cumulative GPA) as an undergraduate.
  • Be enrolled at the University of Oklahoma for the duration of the award as a full-time student.
  • Demonstrate strong academic and leadership potential.

Application Process

The following documents are required:

  1.  The completed application form: Right-click here and chose "Save Target-As" to download the application (Microsoft Word Document).
  2. A brief resume’ that illustrates demonstrated academic leadership and community involvement.
  3. Three letters of recommendation, one each from a teacher, principal, and community member (may be sent under separate cover).
  4. A two page essay on the topic, "Why the study of biofuels and alternative energy is important."

Applications must be received by April 16. Scholarship selections will be announced May 1st.  Awards will be disbursed during sooner orientation of the first week of classes at the K20 Center.

Selection Committee

The selection committee will be comprised of K20 Center directors.  Upon review of the applications (with possible personal interviews and review from representatives of the energy industry) the committee will make final award determinations. Awards will be reviewed annually for compliance with award guidelines.
